review paint tap the ethereal

Musik Wien

FRISCHEGARANTIE
Paint, Tap the Ethereal,
Delphy Entertainment Rec./ Extraplatte
MARTIN PHILADELPHYS PAINT with MARC RIBOT/LUKAS LIGETI - Paint: Tap the Ethereal [2 CD set] (Extraplatte 13; Germany) Featuring Martin Philadelphy on guitar & vocals, Christian Martinek on turntable and effects, Didier Hampl on bass & Jorg Hollwarth on drums, with guests Franz Hautzinger, Richi Klammer & Christian Selinger on trumpets, Marc Ribot on guitar, Pavel Fajt & Lukas Ligeti on drums, Christoph Dienz on zither and Didi Bruckmayr on vocals. Martin left us with a disc from his band Paint last year and two more Paint discs this year, 'Tap the Ethereal' was recorded live at eight sets throughout 2003 and 2004. Martin has an odd, deep voice that he uses more as another Instrument, with no lyrics involved, sounding like a lunatic at times.
Nice to near micro-tonal quarter-tone trumpet hero Franz Hautzinger playing in more rocking, electric context with some echoplex use. The overall sound here is sorta free/rock/space jamming. Martin plays lots of twisted solos, bending those notes in different directions, often playing electric guitar drenched with some effective devices. Didier Hampl plays some fine fretless bass, setting us grooves for Martin's space guitar and occasional whammybar solos. All the pieces flow together and take us on a long journey through hills and valleys, the guitar solos telling the shortstories. l can hear Ribot playing someacoustic slide guitar on a couple of these pieces, working well with that spaced out electric guitar and el. trumpet excursions. Stoner music? l'm notsure, since l haven't gotten stoned in a many many years, but it does work well to take us all away.
