Pfhouu, Live!, Delphy Entertainment Records - this two-piece band features vocalist Martin Philadelphy of Austria on guitar and vocals and David Wasik of Buffalo on drums' percussion and occasion verbal encouragement during a European show. Pfhouu gets a very full sound out of its spare lineup, and blends lots of styles as previously mentioned in my recent Wasik interview, with regular and progressive rock, jazz, blues and fusion the main, but not sole, flavors. While most of the singing is in German, Philadelphy enjoys using English "because it's so cool" he says during the first song, "Esperanto + Pygmy Zwielicht." After an introduction of speaking mostly by Philadelphy in German, English and a touch of Esperanto, and Wasik's simple but enjoyable vamping, tossing in some bombs among the shuffeling beat, Philadelphy describes the language before launching into some high-pitched wah-wah guitar with a slippery or watery feel, then adding more punch. The listener can make out occasional words such as "in the twilight" and "kitchen " but much is rather guttural and the guitar work of Philadelphy and never-miss-a-beat support by Wasik is the reason to listen. Philadelphy Mends progressive rock, jazz, chicken-scratch and wah-wah guitar on "Dies Gehort Mir" with fast, snappy snare drums from Wasik; "Stimmtrommelment ("vocal drum something" according to my incomplete translation)" has high-pitched virtual scat singing from Philadelphy, then goes to yodeling in German, while his guitar sounds are part jazz/rock fusion and part chiming rock. "Trompetettwein" is packed with things, beginning as progressive rock before Philadelphy simplifies the guitar riff and Wasik supplies support and a virtual melodic counterpoint with rock and jazz sounds. The singing adds 'tougher chords before returning to its original approach, then Philadelphy sings in what could be Italian or Latin. He plays a rhythmic solo with good melody, while Wasik's drums surge and ebb before he add some bombs. Philadelphy plays more wah-wah guitar, this time in a very 1970s-early; 1980s style you'd hear on overnight radio, on Liebling (Darling)," and adds funky, stinging feel to the sound, while Wasik again backs him with rhythm, and counter sounds. “Jerubel" has rough, guitar and rolling, cha-cha drums as it speeds up and slows down, “Arschtritt(Ass Ride)" has jangly progressive guitar sounds as Philadelphy and Wasik sound lighter; and dreamier, and "Sauber und Diskret (Clean and Discrete)", starts with light, climming /guitar that adds a country rock feel, especially from Wasik's galloping drums.

Willkommen bei Delphy-Entertainment und dem Philadelphy-Wasik-Konsortium PFHOUU... diesesmal mit einer Live-CD aufgenommen im Phone-Club Innsbruck (Workstation) und WUK Wien (Vertrieb Hoanzl Wien). Es ist eigentlich eine Frechheit schon wieder eine CD zu veröffentlichen, noch dazu, da wieder 3 Nummern auf allen bisherig erschienen Philadelphy CDs zu hören sind. Nur: Diese Versionen sind so gut und live - er musste sie veröffentlichen. Und der Erfolg gibt ihm recht: Noch nie soviele verkaufte CDs auf einer Tour (ca. 20 pro Gig). Das Rezept: Zappaerbgut, freakig, deutschsprachig, kabarettistisch und 4/4-Hanfmotor, sauber und diskret ("Trompetenwein"). Auf alle Fälle kommt im Herbst unweigerlich eine Acappella-CD heraus mit alles neuen Nummern.

Der junge Innsbrucker Songwriter und Gitarrist mit wechselnden Aufenthaltsorten hat nach den Studioaufnahmen seines Trios "Pfhouu...Live" auf Bassist Andy Haller verzichtet. Der vorliegende Mitschnitt von Konzerten in Innsbruck (Werkstation) und Wien (WUK) ist als beinahe handgefertigte Special Edition gewiß ein Sammlerstück für Fans des älplerischen Querdenkers. An Martin Philadelphy scheiden sich die Geister - entweder man liebt ihn, oder man ignoriert ihn, ein "naja ..." wird man selten über ihn hören. Ein Livemitschnitt bringt natürlich die Fähigkeiten des leidenschaftlichen Kommunikators weit besser zur Geltung als eine Studiokonserve. Aus seiner Verehrung für Frank Zappa ("Pygmy Zwielicht") macht Martin Philadelphy kein Hehl, seine kontroversiell ironischen bis zynischen Texte sind gewöhnungsbedürftig. Ist man jedoch bereit, sich vorbehaltlos auf ihn einzulassen, offenbart sich das - sicher noch des Feinschliffs bedürfende Kreativpotential des Innsbruckers zwischen Rock und Fusion. Einmal mehr in großartiger Form, agiert der New Yorker Drummer David Wasik, der schon mit Hans Platzgummer zu begeistern wußte. (Don, Concerto 11.1999)

philadelphy's pfhouu... fabrizieren schlicht und einfach psychedelischen rock, genauer betrachtet erzeugen sie damit den groove, der ihre großteils hypnotischen tonschöpfungen tanzbar macht, man spürt richtig, dass dieses trio seinen spaß damit hat und das kommt vor allem in ihren jazzlastigen rock-beat-nummern zur geltung. auch noch zu erwähnen ist ihre großes repertoire an "klassischen stimmen", das jeden auftritt von ihnen auch zum kaba-rett-erlebnis macht (minnegesang, soul und hc- nichts ist vor ihnen sicher) fun!
